We wish we could give zero stars, but unfortunately that’s not possible, so here is one.
We came to Coogee Bay Hotel to celebrate our best friend’s 22nd birthday and spent well over $1000 as a group of 9 people. We arrived at 1:30pm and stayed until close, so we were long-time paying customers and expected to be treated with basic respect.
Near closing time, our birthday girl went to the bathroom while the rest of us waited at our table. Security approached us and asked us to leave, and we politely explained that we were happy to go, we were just waiting for our friend who was in the bathroom.
Despite this, another security guard came over and insisted the bathrooms had been cleared and that no one was inside. We even called our friend, who confirmed she was still in the bathroom. We calmly explained this, but staff continued to dismiss us and pressure us to leave immediately.
We were cooperative the entire time and repeatedly said we would leave as soon as our friend returned. Eventually one of our group went with security to check, and it turned out our friend had been in a different bathroom section that was still open, something we were never informed about.
After we had cooperated, caused no fuss in the original venue, and moved toward the separate section that was still open, the security guards became extremely rude. We were told we were being “disruptive” and a “headache,” which was completely unfair. We had barely been drinking, were calm and respectful throughout, and simply wanted to make sure our friend was safe.
We asked to speak to a manager, but the security guards refused to allow us to do so. We then walked over to the pokies entrance where a manager eventually came and spoke with us. He actually listened, was respectful, and told us we were allowed to go back in. He even spoke on his walkie talkie to security to confirm we could re-enter.
However, when we returned to the main entrance, the security guards still refused us entry. Shortly after, a different manager approached and said he had overruled the first manager and that we were not allowed in at all.
To make matters worse, we were effectively banned despite spending a significant amount of money and cooperating the whole time.
Very disappointing end to what was meant to be a special birthday celebration. The way security handled the situation was dismissive, unprofessional, unnecessarily hostile, and extremely rude. Definitely not the customer service you expect after spending so much money.
Would not recommend based on this experience.
Please see attached the images of said second manager and security.

After a challenging year in 2025, we wanted a break from our busy life in NZ. We love Coogee Bay so chose this hotel for its location. We loved it. Comfortable room, easy walk to the shops, beach and coast walks. And lovely people, very welcoming. Highly recommend.

It was the first time since 2018 that I have been here. Now I remember why. It's very noisy with an obnoxious crowd. Many people seem intoxicated and therefore vape in the areas where food is served. The demographic there is odd and uncomfortable. The bathrooms were extremely dirty, even at 530pm. On the upside, the pizza was good and the nacho portion much larger than expected.
